Artist Statement — Anna Mercedes

I am particularly investing in researching notions around the body as a materiality and as a subject of discourse, the limitations of representation and the codes which construct and reproduce identities. My work emerges through the tension between the desire to order the chaos of the unconscious and the persistent failure to do so. The notion of transformation and ambiguity assume an important role in my work. Taking its roots in anatomy and psychoanalytic theories, my work investigates concepts of the body, unconsciousness, as well as alternative subjectivities of human conditions.
